Platform-Specific Policies

Navigating Platform-Specific Privacy Policies (Shopify, Meta, App Stores)

While having a general website privacy policy is great, if you rely on third-party platforms like Shopify, Apple, Google Play, or Meta (Facebook), you are bound by their specific, and often rigorous, privacy requirements.

What is a Privacy Policy URL?

When you submit an app to the Apple App Store, Google Play Console, or create an app on LinkedIn, you will be asked for a Privacy Policy URL. This is simply a direct web link to the privacy policy hosted on your website. Without a valid URL, these platforms will reject your application.

Where is the privacy policy in Google Play Console? You must input your URL under the "App Content" section at the very bottom of the console menu.

Shopify Privacy Policies

If you run an e-commerce store, where to edit the privacy policy in Shopify is a common question. Shopify has a dedicated section under Settings > Legal where you can paste your policy text.

Does Shopify have a privacy policy requirement? Yes. Because you are processing credit cards and shipping data, you must have a highly specific policy that dictates how order information is processed by Shopify Inc. and transferred across borders.

Meta (Facebook) and Ad Networks

What is Facebook's privacy policy requirement for advertisers? If you are running Facebook Ads and using the Meta Pixel, you must have a privacy policy on your landing page. Furthermore, your policy must explicitly disclose that third parties (Meta) may use cookies, web beacons, and other storage technologies to collect or receive information from your websites and use that information to provide measurement services and target ads.

Corporate Updates: Why is Everyone Updating Their Privacy Policy?

You frequently receive emails saying "We've updated our Privacy Policy" from companies like Samsung, TikTok, Verizon, and ChatGPT. Why does this happen?

When major legislation (like the EU's Digital Markets Act or California's CPRA) goes into effect, mega-corporations must update their terms to comply.

For instance, do I have to agree to the Samsung privacy policy? Generally, to use their smart services and internet-connected TV features, yes. However, modern laws require them to offer opt-outs for targeted advertising and data sharing within those policies.
